Sometimes, what matters most isn’t what’s written.
It’s what’s implied.
In therapy, I learned to listen for what clients weren’t saying.
The hesitation before a sentence.
The pause that lingered too long.
The part of the story that was quietly avoided.
Those moments carried as much information as the words themselves.
That same skill shapes my work in voiceover today. Because in VO, it’s not enough to read the script.
You have to read beneath it.
What Active Listening Really Looks Like
Active listening isn’t nodding along or waiting your turn to speak.
It’s noticing shifts in tone.
Tracking emotional undercurrents.
Paying attention to what changes when certain words appear.
Research in psychology consistently shows that active listening involves interpreting tone, pauses, and nonverbal cues — not just the literal words being spoken.
In therapy, this kind of listening builds trust. Clients feel understood because they know they’re being heard — fully.
That mindset transfers directly into voiceover narration.
Reading a Script Isn’t the Same as Reading Intent
Most scripts don’t spell everything out.
Direction might be as simple as “conversational” or “confident.”
And that leaves a lot unsaid.
Active reading in voiceover means:

They’re hiring someone who can hear what’s beneath the script — and deliver what the audience actually needs to hear.
That’s what reduces pickups.
That’s what prevents missed tone.
And that’s what turns words into communication.
